Cut Piece/Seeing,
performance Yoko Ono premiered her fluxus-event Cut Piece in Kyoto/Japan
in 1964. The artist sat motionlessly on a low pedestal, and the
audience was asked to cut away her clothing with scissors. Performing
the piece on a private view I added Seeing to transform it: Every
time a piece of my clothing was cut away, I drew a pictogram of
an eye on the revealed part of my naked skin. There is an obvious
voyeuristic pleasure in the gradual denudation of a passive human
body, but the body itself becomes an extraordinary and attentive
observer by the drawn signs.
